However, you can't turn a blind eye to the blemishes either. Not much happens in the first hour of GULAAB GANG [the writing lacks meat!], after Soumik introduces us to the pivotal characters. Lack of conflict or face-off is also one of the reasons why the first hour never really impresses. Also, Soumik could've avoided the usage of songs [the synchronized steps and the reference to 'Ek Do Teen' in a sequence look out of place], since the focus in a film like GULAAB GANG is on drama primarily. Fortunately, GULAAB GANG is back on tracks in the post-interval portions. The simmering tension between Madhuri and Juhi is captured wonderfully. Besides, a couple of dramatic sequences leave a hammer-strong impact. In addition, the chameleon-like opportunistic character of Juhi catches your eye in the second hour.

By PTI: The producers of Madhuri Dixit, Juhi Chawla-starrer Gulaab Gang on Monday opposed the plea that the ongoing screening of the movie has amounted to "continuous defamation" of activist Sampat Pal. They told the Delhi high court that the film has bombed at the box office.
The court had last Friday lifted the stay granted on release of the film by a single judge bench on the ground that the movie depicted Uttar Pradesh-based activist Sampat Pal and her Gulabi Gang in a poor light.Read Story: She got Pink'd. Gulabi Gang leader gets the boot The counsel for Pal today also made a fresh plea for stay on the screening of movie saying, "I have seen the film. It has instances of my life and I go to jail in the end for the offence of attempt to murder. This is continuous defamation. Please take it from me, I am not here for money. I am not going to settle it for money. I have fought for women's cause through legal means. I am being defamed," he said.
Before she played the antagonist in "Gulaab Gang" and impressed movie goers, Juhi Chawla had won hearts in the film industry with bubbly, girl-next-door roles during the 1990s. The veteran actress says she thought of herself as "the best villain ever", but found it strange that movie makers did not approach her for more such roles.

The same holds of the film. It has its heart in the right place. It portrays rural oppression of women with honesty. But the brutality is brittle and sometime laughable. The women in the Gulaabi gang are shown to often break into songs composed by the director and dances choreographed by Saroj Khan. They are more irritants than militant. 2ff7e9595c
